Hello Friends:

Welcome to our first newsletter. Be sure to subscribe to future newsletters HERE. Or go to our website and subscribe on the home page. Keep reading to learn more about NHA and the individuals we serve.

Nutrition and Health Associates (NHA) is a local nonprofit organization serving economically challenged families in Rock County. We provide healthy foods, nutrition education and breastfeeding support through the WIC program. We also provide prenatal care coordination and healthchecks for children up to age 5. It is our mission to promote excellent nutrition and health choices through education, maternal and child programming and community partnerships.

Recently NHA welcomed 3 new Breastfeeding Peer Counselors. WIC peer counselors provide breastfeeding information and support to new moms, support includes:

★ Tips for breastfeeding comfortably, even in public.

★ Ways to stay close to your baby through breastfeeding after returning to work or school.

★ Getting support from family and friends.

★ Getting a good start with breastfeeding.

WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors have successfully breastfed for a minimum of 6 months within the past 5 years. They are breastfeeding enthusiasts and love helping others enjoy a positive experience.

Outcomes in June

In June, we completed 128 Prenatal Care Coordination visits with nurse Julie. This program helps reduce infant mortality, preterm labor and low birth weights. Have you heard of Count the Kicks? Nurse Julie introduces this program to expecting moms in their third trimester. Paying attention to movement helps them get to know what’s normal for their baby and speak up if they notice a change. To learn more, visit https://countthekicks.org/.

We completed 105 Healthchecks for children under the age of 5. Nurse Siobain assesses ages and stages to ensure childhood growth and development is on target. We also partnered with Rock County Head Start hosting multiple Lead Clinics providing 59 Lead checks for children. Children are at a higher risk of lead exposure due to environmental contaminants. High exposure can have serious consequences for their health including damage to the brain and central nervous system.
