Breastfeeding Mothers and Infants

The new WIC foods help you and your breastfed baby meet today’s nutrition needs as recommended by your healthcare provider. At six months of age your baby can receive infant food fruits, vegetables, and cereal.

It contains foods that:

  • are high in fiber and low in fat
  • help you reach a healthy weight
  • provide good variety and a nutritious balance of vitamins and minerals
  • follow Dietary Guidelines, MyPlate, and infant feeding recommendations

The Breastfeeding Package includes the following foods:

FOR MOM

  • GRAINS
    • Iron-fortified cereal
    • Approved whole wheat/whole-grain food, such as:
      • 100% Whole Wheat Bread, Buns, Rolls
      • Soft Corn/Whole Wheat Tortillas
      • Brown Rice
      • Whole Wheat Pasta
  • FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
    • $11 for approved fruit and/or vegetables: fresh, frozen or canned (Fully BF)
    • $11 for approved fruit and/or vegetables: fresh, frozen or canned (Partially BF)
    • Vitamin C-rich juice
  • DAIRY
    • Low-fat (1%) or fat-free (skim) milk
    • Cheese (fully breastfeeding only)
  • PROTEIN
    • Dry or canned beans/peas
    • Peanut butter
    • Eggs
    • Canned fish: tuna or salmon (fully breastfeeding only)

FOR BABY

  • Iron-fortified cereal
  • Baby food fruits and vegetables (fully breastfed can receive twice as much as non-breastfed)
  • Your breast milk!
  • Infant formula (partially breastfed only)
  • Baby food meat (fully breastfed only)
