Shopping for WIC Foods

Before you go to the store...

  • Check your check’s first day to use date. Make sure you are taking your most current checks to the grocery store.
  • Make sure your proxy(s) are aware of how to use the checks at the store and they have signed the WIC ID card.
  • Be aware of what stores in the area accept WIC checks

While you’re at the store...

  • Separate your WIC foods from the other foods you are buying.
  • Use your WIC Approved Food Guide to guide you through the store- it will tell what what foods are eligible and in what size packaging

When checking out...

  • Group your WIC foods by each check you will be using
  • Sign your WIC checks in front of the cashier upon paying. Do not sign your checks beforehand.
  • When using your Fruit and Vegetable check, be aware that you may go over the dollar amount printed on the check, but pay the extra amount from your own pocket.

If you have problems shopping for WIC foods at the grocery store, notify a manager of that store. Save your store receipt and note the time, date and other memorable details of your shopping trip. Call your local WIC agency or State WIC program if the matter has not been resolved to your satisfaction.
