Breastfeed when your baby first shows signs of hunger

Babies let you know they are hungry by:

  • sucking on their hands; lip smacking.
  • rooting — turning head sideways with mouth open.
  • fussing.
  • you may also see an increase in body movements such as stretching, or hand-to-mouth movements

If your baby is crying, a late sign of hunger, calm him before trying to breastfeed.

Keep your baby close to help you learn the early signs of hunger!
