This Month's Breastfeeding Bulletin:
The Best Start to Breastfeeding
- Have a breastfeeding plan
- Talk with your doctor about your breastfeeding plan
- Ask about “My Breastfeeding Plan” during your WIC visit
- Breastfeed as soon as possible after birth
- Baby can latch within the first 60 minutes after delivery
- Ask about latching baby after birth during your WIC visit
- Snuggle Skin-to-skin with baby
- Undress baby and hold next to your bare skin
- Skin –to-skin helps breastfeeding, keeps baby warm and calm
- Keep baby in your hospital room
- Babies breastfeeding every 1 ½ - 3 hours
- Keeping baby close helps you know when to feed
- Avoid bottles in the first month
- Allow baby time to become a “master” at breastfeeding
- The more baby breastfeeds the more milk you make
- Ask for help in the hospital and when you get home
- Request a lactation counselor observe a feeding
- Call the WIC office with questions about breastfeeding
